Curling originated in Scotland around 500 years ago. In Bruegel’s 1565 painting, Winter Landscape with Bird Trap, there are curlers playing on the frozen lake. The Scottish and Dutch had strong cultural ties at that time. And curling was played outdoors and the “rock” was, well, a smooth bottomed rock.
