Genocide Intervention Network: Making a difference

Can you stop genocide from your cell phone? According to Mark Hanis, president and founder of Genocide Intervention Network, it is a part of creating an anti-genocide political constituency in the United States. And it is as simple as calling 1-800-Genocide.

I made a call this morning. The message informed me of recent attacks in Darfur by the Sudanese government. Then I was prompted to give my zip code, and my call was forwarded to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s public information hot line.

The Prophet...not the feel good movie of the year

The other night we saw “Un prophète” (The Prophet). It is an uncompromising look at a teenage Arab boy who becomes a serious criminal in a French prison. Along the way, there are severe beatings, murder, corruption, and graphic eye gouging. And it is long.

By the way, it is not the film version of Khalil Gibran’s “The Prophet.” At least, I don’t think so because I never read the book.
