Auto Historica IX: Classic cars in Highland Park….Little Pebble Beach?

Auto Historica IX

Auto Historica IX

First conducted in 1950, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is often said to be the world’s premier celebration of the automobile. Only the most beautiful and rare automobiles are invited to appear on the famed eighteenth fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links each year, and connoisseurs of art and technology congregate to see them

Well, save your airfare this year….”little Pebble Beach” is coming to Highland Park.

You’ve seen the awesome poster all over town. Now see the real thing:  The Automobile as Art. Sunday July 12, 11am – 3pm on the grounds of the Highland Park Historical Society.

Ageless North Shore asked Jeff Stern, an organizer of the event about Auto Historica IX.

How did these cool cars end up on the lawn of the Historical Society?

JS: It started about 12 years ago in Wilmette when some auto enthusiasts got together and decided to have a show of unusual and outstanding autos that the public rarely gets to see.

If my car is a classic, can I get it shown?

JS: You would need to contact the car exhibit committee which would decide if the car met the criteria for participation. The committee could be contacted through the Highland Park Historical Society.

Anyone with an unusual or rare auto that is well maintained is welcome to apply to participate in a show.  Car clubs become involved when a particular marque (or brand) is chosen to highlight that year’s show.

What about this year’s marque?

JS: This year’s marque will be the Morgan, an English sports car, of which there will be several on display. Morgan has a rich historic value as well as an impressive racing heritage.  Morgans featured in the show will range from a three-wheel Morgan Trike to a 200 mile-per-hour Morgan that raced at LeMans.

Auto Historica IX will offer some of the rarest automobiles from private collections.  This year’s cars will include a Tucker Convertible, a 1926 Bugatti, a 1935 Packard V-12 dual-cowl Phaeton, an Allard sports car, and a 1955 Falcon Concept Car. There will also be some very unusual automobiles on view like the Zundapp Janus and Stout Scarab, and such exotic sports cars as a 1955 Ferrari 250 GT Roadster.  Several Indian Motorcycles will be exhibited, including a rare 1916 Twin with side car and a 1940 four-cylinder Indian.

Auto Historic IX will offer two  live auction opportunities…a ride in a Highland Park fire truck and a free week’s rental on an Audi Q5, a 3.2 270-horsepower crossover vehicle with six-speed triptonic automatic transmission, courtesy of the Audi Exchange in Highland Park.  The proceeds benefit the Highland Park Historical Society.

Adult admission is $5.00… Questions: 847-432-7090.

Ageless North Shore will be there and we hope to see you there….
