We decided to take a look at the world of blogging by people of a certain age – this first installment is taken from a list of “elderblogs” on Time Goes By – what it’s really like to get older. We tried to look at the complete list, but after a while looking at pictures of peoples’ cats (PEOPLE! sleeping cats are boring!), reading about anxiety caused by failing recall skills and bad blogger poetry got to be kind of a drag…
So, lucky readers, we have winnowed this blog list down to just the cool and interesting stuff. And here it is:

Ken Broadhurst is a guy from North Carolina who lives in France’s Loire Valley and documents his gardening, French cooking, French politics, etc. on his blog http://ckenb.blogspot.com/. It’s a good-looking blog, well-written, with very nice photography. Excellent for those interested in a vicarious retirement in France.
And speaking of France, at sablonneuse.wordpress.com/ a retired teacher moves to France from England with grumpy husband, handicapped ex-husband, son, daughter and six cats. (Don’t blame us, it was the French who came up with the word “voyeur” in the first place…)

James Ridgeway, Senior Washington Correspondent for Mother Jones magazine writes about the politics of aging at http://unsilentgeneration.com/. He describes Unsilent Generation as
a site for people who don’t believe that getting old means getting dumb, getting conservative, getting complacent, or getting used to spending your days driving a golf cart to early bird dinner specials. It’s a site for people who know that old age doesn’t have to be a slow shuffle toward the grave, but it also isn’t always the glorious adventure that’s depicted in “senior” lifestyle magazines or commercials for retirement investments.

Women’s Voice for Change, “today’s most informative site for women who were not born yesterday” describes themselves as a news, commentary and opinion website that celebrates women’s health, beauty, wisdom and vibrancy. It’s less flaky and much smarter than that description makes it sound.
Sustainable Gardening: Susan Harris is a garden writer, gardening coach, Master Gardener, and activist for urban and suburban greening in the Washington, D.C. area. Her blog has plenty of useful information and resources for gardeners.

Pure Land Mountain, “Views from a Japanese Mountainside” is a thoughtful mix of memoir and gardening by an American living in Japan. His brother is also a blogger; they describe themselves as “Two Black-Irish-American brothers from the mythical city of Albany, New York” .
