Julie Keywell and Steve Wilneff, founders of the new website, thegotspot told me over lunch recently about a new Farmer’s Market in Highwood. Ageless North Shore is all about Farmer’s Markets.
Last Wednesday, I found Highwood’s Evening Gourmet Farmer’s Market. You can find the Market at 17 Highwood Avenue, in front of city hall, under the trees, and next to the tracks. The Market began last Wednesday and will run 3pm-8pm Wednesdays through October. Or as one vendor told me, “until it gets cold.” The Market is one of the Celebrate Highwood events.
Throughout much of its history beginning in 1887, Highwood grew up around the Fort Sheridan. Because of this and the fact that surrounding communities were “dry,” many of the town’s businesses were taverns and bars. It is written, perhaps apocryphally, that Highwood set the Guinness World Record for most bars per square mile and was called “the toughest town in America” by President Theodore Roosevelt.
Today there are still many restaurant and bars in
Highwood. However, the closing of the Fort Sheridan effectively doubled the size of the town and led to its achieving home rule status in 2007. Celebrate Highwood points the way to a new vision for the community.
Among the offerings were plants and flowers from Amidei Mercatino of Lake Forest… jars of honey from Wisconsin, wines from the Cellar Gate, and taquitos from Casa de Isaac.
We talked with Isaac and he was excited about the grocery store he’d opened a few doors down from his restaurant. For a great look at Isaac and brother Moishe’s deli, check out the pics and stories on the LTH Forum site, the Chicago-based culinary chat site. Awesome and delicious.
Also making the rounds was newly elected Alderman Eric Falberg. The former New Yorker is excited about the Farmer’s Market and the upcoming Parisian Market. This event will feature 150 antique dealers and a flea market on July 17th. We will certainly keep you posted.
Although last Wednesday was chilly, you could imagine hanging out
on a warm summer night. Listening to the music, sampling the food (the Italian ice looked outstanding), and bringing home some fresh fruits and vegetables.
We’ll be back…

We got this e-mail from Eric Falberg, Highwood Alderman…
The Highwood Evening Gourmet Farmers market is fast becoming the place to be throughout the North Shore on Wednesday evenings. We can only imagine how vibrant it will be this evening with the weather is finally on our side.
Amidei will be bringing a large variety of cut flowers.
The Corn Guy is BACK!
Maria from Il Mulino is coming out of hibernation with her Italian delights. Please congratulate her on her son’s marriage when you see her.
Sugar River will be joining us for the first time this evening, and we might even see the Kettle Corn Guy tonight as well.
Antonio the artist has become a hit with the kids. It’s not your everyday face painting, it’s artwork. He does not charge, but donations are recommended.
Don’t forget to check your cabinet to see if you need some more olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette from the Olive Tap, or more spices from Spice It Up.
Live music will start at 5pm this evening.
I’m a guitar teacher at the Music Gallery in Highland and I’m interested in having myself and students perform this summer 2011 at the Highwood Farmers Market. Who do I need to contact to see about setting something like this up?
Any information is appreciated.
Thanks-
