Stacy Brailov Foisy and Beth Snyder continue to work towards building a creative and intellectual community in Evanston, aimed at artists, writers, filmakers, photographers and other creative types, age 45 and older. THENEWSTUDIO website should be up soon we will share it with you.

Lee Reilly is the author of two non-fiction books and winner of several prizes for fiction. (Click here for her site).  She read a number of “flash fiction” …short pieces of 500 or fewer words. Someone remarked that “flash fiction” is to the short story as haiku is to a poem. Lee’s pieces included “Cross Words” a very moving portrait of the distance between a mother and a daughter and “Retirement,” a charming fable about Fairy Godmothers and reluctance of Cinderellas (across a range of cultures) to take over the mantle.

Louis Weisberg, a former journalist and the founding editor of the Chicago Free Press, read from his novel “Too Nervous for Lunch.” Josh grows up in the south where his father, the owner of a retail store, hosts a TV show called “Hometown Hoedown.” His father is referred to as the “Hillbilly Jew.” Josh is both fascinated and repulsed by his father’s transformation into the character of “Cousin Harry.” That fascination brings Josh to Hollywood to seek what people seek in Hollywood. We see Josh hilariously serving Cher at a restaurant on his way to sitcom stardom.

In real life, Louis did wait on Cher while he was in LA. Among the revelations: Cher is actually pretty nice, looks somewhat average looking without her make-up and she is short!  Who knew?

The discussion that followed the readings included thoughts on motivation, writing discipline, inspiration and style. The intimate setting and intentional limit on seating encourages very open and lively discussions.

THENEWSTUDIO will next present Mandy Brown. an Iranian born architect, who has become passionate about photography in recent years. The event begins at 7:00 on Tuesday October 13. See flyer below for details or call Beth@773-989-0083 or Stacey@847-207-5100.
