Stacy Brailov Foisy (a self-described “tail-end baby boomer” and gerontologist) and Beth Snyder, writer/editor by trade and poet at heart, have started The New Studio, a creative and intellectual community in Evanston, aimed at artists, writers, filmakers, photographers and other creative types, age 45 and older. Now that is preaching to the Ageless North Shore choir!
One evening a month the Frame Warehouse in Evanston
opens its space to The New Studio, with Stacy and Beth leading an exciting interchange of art and ideas. Gatherings are limited to about 15 people so the participants can meet and talk to each other (and enjoy the refreshments together).
In April local artist Joe Cane spoke about “The Zen of Navajo Weaving.” May brought readings from contemporary poets, presented by Jan Molinaro and Beth Snyder.
The next New Studio evening in July will feature photographer Mel Winer; please call Stacey at 847-207-5100 for more information and for reservations (seating is limited, and a $5 donation would be “greatly appreciated”).
June’s program featured an evening with
Linda and Stuart Shayman, two artists from Deerfield, who described how their lives as artists have evolved. Stuart is an architect who hadn’t painted since college. Stuart took up the brush about 8 years ago. And his wife Linda, who spent many years in the business world, has found time to work in many media, including metalwork, silk painting, ceramics, beading and painting. The Shaymans now share a beautiful studio (Stuart’s design, of course) attached to their house, where the Shaymans paint, show their work, and Linda teaches beading.
We asked the Shaymans about their experience presenting their work at The New Studio. Linda wrote:
“Our experience -and I speak for both of us- was incredible. It was a retrospective of our work. It was very heady to have this opportunity to present ourselves as artists in the community, to share our passion, and to receive the positive responses and accolades, such as you writing this article.
This event gave us the opportunity to really consider and analyze how we’ve developed as artists and how we create our art. It made us articulate our feelings about our passion. It helped reinforce our need to create art, as well as the knowledge that we really have something to offer. The wonderful feelings this evokes is palpable and visceral.
Stacey and Beth have created the New Studio to offer this experience to both the artist and the community; they have successfully pulled this together and should be acknowledged for their fine effort.”
You can see the paintings of both Shaymans and Linda’s artistic jewelry creations on their website, and find out what those “Girls Night Out” beading classes are all about.

Please ask Stacey Brailov Foicy to contact me.
Thank you.
