Little League Crime, Classic Cars and Foiled Again

Ed McMahon and Carnac the Magnificent

Ed McMahon and Carnac the Magnificent

In tribute to the late Ed McMahon, we have kept this question “hermetically sealed and kept in a mayonnaise jar on Funk and Wagnall’s porch since noon today.” No one could possibly divine this answer AND YET….

The answer is….

What are the cool kids from Ageless North Shore doing this weekend?

On Friday July 10,  we’ll be at the Poetry Open Mic at Borders Highland Park… 8:00 pm.  Come to read or to listen. As Jennifer Dotson of Highland Park Poetry says, “the atmosphere is welcoming and supportive…no slamming.” Charlie Schwartz will preside. Sign up and read. Don S., frequent contributor to Ageless North Shore, will debut his latest poem, “The Little League of Crime,” based on a true story. The names have been changed to protect the embarrassed.

Sunday July 12, Auto Historica IX, 11 am to 3 pm on the grounds of the Highland Park Historical Society. Read all about it in Wednesday’s post.

And on Monday, July 13: 7:30: the entire Ageless North Shore staff will go to Space. We know what you’re thinking, but no, we are not visiting our home planet – we are headed to Evanston to see Foiled Again, a vocal trio that performs a diverse selection from the jazz and folk music of Joni Mitchell.

Foiled Again is Allison Bazarko, Rob Lindley and  Anne Sheridan Smith, with Doug Peck on piano. We got tipped off to them by the fan list of Chicago Cabaret.

On our last trip to Space…we ate some fabulous thin crust wood fired pizza at Union Pizzeria which shares the building with Space. There is, dare I say it, a city vibe to the Union Pizzeria and Space. It’s city with some age diversity, if you know what I mean. If you’re over a certain age, you won’t feel like an intruder.

Space is a great listening room with a full bar and tables you can reserve. Or you can take your chances. Read their saucy FAQ for more info.

According to their myspace page, Foiled Again was “formed in 2001 for their first show Holiday Bizarre, and named so because all three members at the time were getting their highlights ‘foiled’ at the same salon. Foiled Again has been delighting audiences in the Chicago area with their amazing harmonies and intricate arrangements.”

And why would we doubt myspace?

Act One of this evening will be a revisit of DARK CAFE DAYS, the show the helped Foiled Again win the 2003 After Dark Award for Outstanding Cabaret Performance with some new Joni songs added to the mix. Act Two will be a mix of other fan favorites from the songbooks of Carole King, Harold Arlen, Susan Werner, Cy Coleman, and many more. A live recording will be made that evening with hopes of a CD release by the end of the year.

You enter Space through the Union Pizzeria, 1245 N Chicago (map).
Tickets are $15 in advance/$20 door/$25 to reserve a cabaret table.
Call 847.492.8860 for tickets or order online from any TicketMaster outlet.
